China remains an attractive market for life science tools suppliers capable of taking advantage of strong demand. In February 2013 we polled our panel of nucleic acid purification (NAP) users regarding their anticipated 12-month life science reagent and instrument budget. As shown in the chart, optimism prevails in all segments as 75.0% of commercial and 64.5% of academic NAP users expect their budget to increase over the next year.
The Chinese government set a long-term goal to cultivate biotechnology as one of the national key industries in 2020. The election of Li Keqiang as China’s Prime Minister this month bodes well for continued bioscience investment, as he has shown strong support for basic research during his 5-year service as Vice Prime Minister. As he said in 2010 at the Zhongguancun (Beijing), “China needs to speed up economic transformation and improve the ability of scientific innovation. We will further increase the investment in science and technology, to attract top talent, and focus on cultivating a number of new industries, such as information technology, biomedicine and renewable energy.”
